National and International championships are held in locations such as Watergate Bay in Cornwall and are just one feature of the annual surfing calendar in the South West. Throughout the summer there are a multitude of surfing events, that attract not only professional sportsmen and women, but a host of like minded spectators with plenty of partying too.
Surfing
Around the coast and on inland lakes throughout the region there are numerous opportunities for surfing. Close to every resort and on a number of remote beaches there are surf centres and multi-activity centres that offer perfect surfing conditions and surf training. Hiring a board is a good option if you're trying the sport for the first time. Its well worth buying or hiring a wetsuit if you can afford it.
Training courses
The best way to master the basics is to invest in surf lessons available through multi-activity centres and surf schools. This will teach you the best techniques and allow you a sound foundation for improving your skills. These are generally not very expensive, include the hire of a board and wetsuit and attract people of all ages.
